Modulation & Tuning

Microtuning

Noemi supports microtuning via the MTS-ESP standard, allowing alternative tuning systems beyond standard 12-tone equal temperament.

Access microtuning settings via File > Microtuning Settings.

MODES

  • Off — Standard 12-TET tuning (default)
  • Client — Connect to an external MTS-ESP master plugin
  • Master — Act as the MTS-ESP master, loading custom tunings

CLIENT MODE

In client mode, Noemi receives tuning data from an external MTS-ESP master plugin running in your DAW or another application. All internal instruments (Chirusa, Ostion) automatically retune to match.

MASTER MODE

In master mode, Noemi broadcasts tuning data to other MTS-ESP client plugins. Load custom tunings via:

  • Load SCL File — Scala scale definition file (defines intervals)
  • Load KBM File — Keyboard mapping file (maps MIDI notes to scale degrees)
  • Reset to 12-TET - Return to standard tuning

SCL/KBM FILES

  • SCL (Scala) files define the intervals of a tuning system. Thousands of historical and experimental tunings are available in Scala format online.
  • KBM (Keyboard Mapping) files define how MIDI note numbers map to scale degrees, allowing you to set the reference pitch and key mapping.

MPE (MIDI POLYPHONIC EXPRESSION)

When microtuning is active, Noemi uses MPE-style per-note pitch bend to achieve accurate intonation. Each note is allocated its own MIDI channel (2-16) so that pitch bend messages don't interfere between simultaneous notes.
